A Two-Species Model for a Fishing System with Marine Protected Areas
نویسندگان
چکیده
A model of a system concerning one species of demersal (inshore) fish and one of pelagic (offshore) fish undergoing fishing restricted by marine protected areas is proposed in this paper. This setup was based on the FISH-BE model applied to the Tabina fishery in Zamboanga del Sur, Philippines. The components of the model equations have been adapted from widely-accepted mechanisms in population dynamics. The model employs Gompertz’s law of growth and interaction on each type of protected and unprotected subpopulation. Exchange coefficients between protected and unprotected areas were assumed to be proportional to the relative area of the entry region. Fishing harvests were assumed to be proportional to both the number of fishers and the number of unprotected fish. An extra term was included for the pelagic population to allow for the exchange between the unprotected area and the outside environment. The systems were found to be bounded for all parameter values. The equations for the steady state were unsolvable analytically but the existence and uniqueness of non-zero steady states can be proven. Plots also show that an MPA size yielding the maximum steady state of the unprotected population can be found. All steady states were found to be globally asymptotically stable for the entire range of parameter values. Keywords—fisheries modelling, marine protected areas, sustainable fisheries, Gompertz Law

Exploring the Fishing by Stake-nets inside the Qeshm Island's Marine Protected Area
High population pressure in coastal areas has led to loss in many mangrove areas. Although these areas are fish nursery grounds, but there are no accurate and up-to-date data available. In this research, the catch data in the Qeshm Island marine protected area (MPA) were investigated using 11 stake nets. Totally, 81 specimens belong to 60 genera and 63 families caught, which majority of them we...
متن کاملTemporal and Spatial Variations of Finfish Bycatch of Cutlassfish Trawl in Bushehr and Hormozgan Marine Waters, the Northern Persian Gulf
The spatial and temporal variations of finfish bycatch assemblage cutlassfish trawl were compared in two fishing areas (Hormozgan and Bushehr). Data were collected on board of commercial vessels in the fishing grounds of Trichiurus lepturus in Bushehr and Hormozgan marine waters between early May 2010 to late November, 2010. There was a significant difference in the bycatch assemblages bet...
متن کاملStriking a balance between biodiversity conservation and socioeconomic viability in the design of marine protected areas.
The establishment of marine protected areas is often viewed as a conflict between conservation and fishing. We considered consumptive and nonconsumptive interests of multiple stakeholders (i.e., fishers, scuba divers, conservationists, managers, scientists) in the systematic design of a network of marine protected areas along California's central coast in the context of the Marine Life Protecti...
متن کاملMarine protected areas facilitate parasite populations among four fished host species of central Chile.
1. Parasites comprise a substantial proportion of global biodiversity and exert important ecological influences on hosts, communities and ecosystems, but our knowledge of how parasite populations respond to human impacts is in its infancy. 2. Here, we present the results of a natural experiment in which we used a system of highly successful marine protected areas and matched open-access areas i...
متن کاملThe role of marine reserves in achieving sustainable fisheries.
Many fishery management tools currently in use have conservation value. They are designed to maintain stocks of commercially important species above target levels. However, their limitations are evident from continuing declines in fish stocks throughout the world. We make the case that to reverse fishery declines, safeguard marine life and sustain ecosystem processes, extensive marine reserves ...
